Because the TDx involves measurement of fluorescence polarization, it was necessary to determine whether diflunisal's native fluorescence could be responsible for the elevated values. To assess this possibility, we assayed the three serum pools for another drug, phenobarbital, using the TDx instrument 4 ; . No reaction was noted, thus eliminating the possibility of drug fluorescence as the source of the interference. Salicylate has a plasma half.life of 2.5 h, diflunisal 8 to 12 Thus, diflunisal interference could cause problems for physicians if salicylate concentrations determined by these methods for therapeutic monitoring are used. We conclude that serum specimens submitted for salicylate determination may result in falsely increased results.

Both species were collected from the same disturbed subtropical dry forested area. A partial checklist of the taxa of macromycetes collected from Boquern Commonwealth- and Laguna Cartagena National Wildlife Refuges is also provided. Introduction Gasteromycetes are defined by Hawksworth et al. 1996 ; as a class of Basidiomycota, traditionally based on holobasidiomycetes with basidiospores which are not ballistosporic strongly correlated with orthotropic spore development ; . They are mainly terrestrial or hypogeous, some lignicolous or coprophilous, some saprobes and some are mycorrhizal. `True' gasteromycetes are applied to 8 orders encompassing 30 families, 106 genera + 147 synonyms ; and 787 species for which affinity is either unknown or not sufficiently evident to be disposed otherwise, among them are the Battarraceae and Tulostomataceae, in the Tulostomatales Hawksworth et al., 1995 ; . Members of these two families grow in xeric habitats with scarce rainfall and soils that often have a high content of mineral nutrients, especially in deserts from around the world. The use of Tulostoma by the North American Ramah Navajo to cure leg bone fractures in sheep, by application either as a poultice or as an infusion, was reported by Burk 1983 ; , as well as the use by Paiute of Battarrea and other puffballs for swellings and sores. The genera Battarrea and Tulostoma are poorly known in the Caribbean, where only a few collections of Tulostoma and no collections of Battatrea have previously been reported. Direct introduction of nitrate esters into the systemic circulation. The availability of a truly long-acting nitrate raises important questions about nitrate tolerance and dependence. Tolerance to circulatory effects of organic nitrates has been experimentally demonstrated in animals and in man, '820 but tolerance to the beneficial influence of nitrates on exercise capacity was not found after isosorbide dinitrate was taken sublingually by patients four times daily for periods lasting up to seven months.3 Similarly, tolerance was not observed in the present study in the patients receiving chronic nitroglycerin ointment therapy. Nonetheless, a more extensive evaluation of nitrate tolerance is clearly required. Nitrate dependence has been hypothesized to explain the excess morbidity and mortality related to angina, myocardial infarction and sudden death in heavily exposed populations of industrial nitrate workers.2'-23 Symptoms in this group of patients occur during periods of withdrawal from nitrate exposure. No evidence of nitrate dependence was observed in the present study. Before the widespread use of nitroglycerin ointment can be recommended, however, greater assurance must be obtained that nitrate dependence does not develop as a result of nitroglycerin ointment therapy. Finally, it should be emphasized that use of nitroglycerin ointment can expose the patient to very large doses of nitroglycerin. Careful individual adjustment is required to prevent manifestations of nitrate overdose. When used in the manner we have described, the doses of nitroglycerin ointment recommended by the manufacturer may be excessive in some patients and smaller initial doses are advisable.

Digoxin is not extensively metabolized and is excreted largely unchanged by the kidneys. Its half-life is 36 to 48 hours with normal or near-normal renal function. In the absence of oral or IV loading doses, steady state is achieved in about four half-lives or 1 week. Its clearance rate is proportional to the GFR and is similar for neonates, infants, children, and adults. For patients with elevated serum creatinine levels, drug clearance closely parallels creatinine clearance. Improvement in cardiac output and renal blood flow through therapy with a variety of agents may increase renal digoxin clearance and require dosage adjustments. Several drugs most notably quinidine, amiodarone, verapamil, and diltiazem ; reduce clearance and can double the serum concentration, resulting in toxicity unless the dose of digoxin is reduced.
